Dozen Shinners

The fishing in Myakka is great -- whether fishing for fun, or out to get the Big One that always seems to get away.Yesterday, I went fishing with my friends at the Flatford Bridge: Josh Simmons, Mike Klaypatch, and Katie Seymour. It is a lot of fun going fishing with these guys. There is never a dull moment.

First, we had to go catch shiners for bait, since we were going bass fishing. At one point, Josh said, "Hey, Mike, how many shiners you think we got?"

Mike replied, "About a dozen."Josh said, "No, I think it's more like 12."

Everyone laughed -- even Josh. When we finally got all 12 shiners caught (or was it a dozen?), we were ready to go bass fishing. We chose Flatford Bridge because not only does it have a great fishing hole, but is also has so much scenic beauty. There are willows all around and great oak trees. In the water is arrowhead and water hyacinth, which have beautiful purple flowers on them. There is also lots of wildlife around, like wood storks and snakes. I don't care for the snakes that much, but the woodstorks are beautiful.

The best time to go fishing there is around 5 or 6 in the evening. For tackle, all we used were bass hooks and shiners. It wasn't much, but it worked because Mike caught a 2-pound bass and Josh caught a 5-pound bass. They were so excited when they caught their fish. Mike yelled, "Oh, yeah, I got you now!" And Josh yelled, "Dude, I think I got like a 40-pounder!" Then we headed back to the truck. We put the fish in Josh's pond so he can catch them when they get bigger.

It was a great fishing day and we all had a lot of fun.
